Leg 2 Day 20 – Very Frustrating Day

Posted by:

We were up with the birds this morning as we were anxious to resume our northbound journey. The engines were started at 6:30am and we shoved off at sunrise which was 6:47am. We were headed for Amelia Island – our last Florida stop.

It was a calm, cool morning as we ventured onto the Tolomato River, another body of water that makes up the ICW. The Saturday morning fisherman were out in droves. We traveled the Tolomato River for 15 miles, all of which was flat marshy terrain. We then entered a very interesting channel called the Palm Valley Cut. It was a narrow channel with beautiful houses running the entire length of it – it was an appealing neighborhood. The narrowness of this 10 mile long channel and the shore property necessitated a slow down in our speed. We enjoyed looking at all the homes along the way.

After exiting the Palm Valley Cut around 10:15am our day turned sour. The starboard engine started going into limp mode again!!! We were both so frustrated!!  The good news is that we were only a few miles from Jacksonville Beach and some marinas. Some quick research indicated that one of the marinas, Beach Marina, had Saturday repair services so we reserved a slip there.

As we were getting ready to enter the Beach Marina channel, a runabout came up beside us with one of the passengers waving both arms at us. We thought it quite strange until we realized that it was our friends from Ponte Vedra Beach, the Lynchs. We shared our distressing news and proceeded into the marina and they proceeded to enjoy their boat ride. A couple of hours later, they came by again for what we thought was a visit. As it turns out, they keep their boat in dry stack at Beach Marina and were coming back in to store the boat. What a coincidence!!

After their boat was pulled out of the water, we met for lunch at the onsite restaurant. Their oldest daughter, Brooke, joined us. I guess the good news for the day was we got a chance to see our friends one more time.

Unfortunately, the repair service was not able to assist us but did give Dick some advise about something to try – which he did. Tomorrow will be another test run.

During today’s journey, we saw many signs of the damage caused by last October’s Hurricane Matthew. It started around St. Augustine and continued all the way to Jacksonville Beach. Beach Marina’s docks and buildings sustained a fair amount of damage.

A frustrating day of boating.
